THE GADGET THAT GETS ME STARTED IN LIFE

Mini plastic toy car - “Could the young but realize how soon they will become mere walking bundles of habits, they would give more heed to their conduct while in the plastic state.”

A funny story has it that, late one night, a party-goer decided it would be best to walk home. He found a shortcut through a poorly lit cemetery and, in the darkness, stumbled into an open grave.

He tried to climb out but the walls were too slippery. Again and again he fell back into the grave. Finally, in exhaustion, he settled in a corner to wait for sunlight.

A few minutes later another man cutting through the cemetery fell victim to the same grave. He, too, tried desperately to climb and claw his way out, and he was equally unsuccessful.

As he was about to give up in hopeless resignation, he heard a voice from the darkness of his pit: "You'll never get out of here."

He did!

He just needed the proper motivation. And in this case, a shot of fear did the trick. But when it comes to finding the motivation to accomplish most worthwhile things, his example is the exception.

I am learning that the best motivation, whether we want to accomplish a task, go back to school, start something new or kick a habit, usually comes from the inside. To be successful, we must want to do it. Others may certainly help to encourage or to "pump us up," but, in the end, we will usually succeed only if we have the desire.

Dorothy Heller illustrates this with an all-too-true poem:

I spent a fortune
On a trampoline,
A stationary bike
And a rowing machine
Complete with gadgets
To read my pulse,
And gadgets to prove
My progress results,
And others to show
The miles I've charted –
But they left off the gadget
To get me started!

Of course they left it off! The gadget to get us started lies within. And the best part is...since you already own it, you can use it anytime you want.

HORSING AROUND IN LIFE

I remember going to the horse racing track in the neighboring state a long time ago. I must have been around 8 years old then. It was the last day of our family trip; having covered all the major tourist attractions, we were looking for a place to kill time.

I’ve seen my share of horses on the telly, but seeing them right before my eyes at the racetrack was something else altogether. Since then, I’ve been perpetually intrigued over horse racing. Looking back, I sure am glad we went to see the horse race instead of going to catch a movie at the local cinema.I’ve always wondered how they train the horses. Apparently, the people in the industry rely on something called a horse walker to make sure that their stallions are in their best shape for the race.

One such company to carry horse walkers is Euro Gait Master. These horse exerciser (as they are otherwise as) are quite different from the way the conventional horse walkers and treadmills work, and are much better at getting the job done. The environment is more conducive for training, which is good news for both the trainer and the horse.

EQUIP THE CHILDREN FOR LIFE

Vacant display booths - “Make no display of your talents or attainments; for every one will clearly see, admire, and acknowledge them, so long as you cover them with the beautiful veil of modesty”

Should we chain our children to the bedpost until they reach adulthood? Should we shield them from all negative influences until they can make mature decisions?

When Dr. Willis Tate was at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, he told of a mother who gallantly tried to protect her son. She wrote a long letter to Dr. Tate about her son who was coming to enroll as a freshman. She wanted the president to make sure that the boy had a "good" roommate who would encourage him to go to church and not use bad language. She did not want the roommate to smoke or otherwise negatively influence her son.

But the mother's closing remarks make the letter unforgettable: "The reason all of this is so important is that it is the first time my boy has been away from home, except for the three years he spent in the Marines."

Parents want to protect their children. But perhaps more importantly, most parents want their children to develop sufficient inner resources to protect themselves in potentially destructive situations. They want to equip them to be independent, to make responsible decisions on their own.

Which means that, as their children grow into adulthood, parents must gradually learn to give up thinking that they can protect them and endeavor more to love them. And isn't love really what children of any age truly need from their parents?
